Jazz Fest 2013 February 22-24

JazzFest_Flyer_c.jpgThe University of Louisville School of Music will sponsor Jazz Fest 2013 from Feb. 22-24 on the Belknap campus of the University of Louisville.  This four-day celebration of America's indigenous musical art form is being presented by the Jazz Studies Program of the U ofL School of Music.  Featured throughout the week will be concerts, clinics, lectures, and workshops with members of the U of L Jazz Faculty, U of L students, and area high school and college students, as well as guest artists.

In its twentieth year, Jazz Fest, the region's premier jazz educational and performance event, will present a diverse program with international and regional jazz talent.  Featured artists include – pianist/composer Amina Figarova and her sextet, saxophonist Dick Oatts, trumpeter Joe Magnarelli, the Zach Brock and Aaron Goldberg Duo Project, and guest adjudicators Paul Scea, Bob Symer, Sean Parsons, and Terry O’Mahoney as well as our own U of L Jazz Ensembles.

This event is a part of U of L's celebration of diversity, and it appropriately occurs during the month of February when the contributions of African-Americans to American culture and history are celebrated.  The musical art of jazz is recognized as having evolved out of the culture of African-Americans near the turn of the century.  Nightly concerts will be held at the School of Music beginning at 8:00 PM Friday through 3:00 PM Sunday afternoon.  Visiting student groups will perform throughout the day on Friday and Saturday.  Jazz Fest 2013 will open on Friday evening with the Amina Figarova Sextet, continue on Saturday with Dick Oatts and Joe Magnarelli and close with a concert by the Zach Brock/Aaron Goldberg Duo Project on Sunday at 3:00 PM in Brid Recital Hall.  Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $5 for students with ID for all of the concerts. Tickets for all of the concerts will be available from the U of L School of Music and may be reserved by phoning (502) 852-6907.  For ticket and additional information visit www.jazz.louisville.edu.

Renowned jazz educator JAMEY AEBERSOLD (improvisation), FIGAROVA (piano), OATTS (saxophone), and MAGNARELLI (trumpet) as well as the U of L JAZZ FACULTY (Ansyn Banks, Jim Connerley, Chris Fitzgerald, John LaBarbera, Jason Tiemann, Jerry Tolson, Mike Tracy, Craig Wagner, and Tyrone Wheeler) will be presenting clinics on Friday and Saturday.
